2012 February General Meeting

Before the meeting and during the break, our club photographer, Donna Ditges, set up a mini studio and took professional headshots of all members for the 2013 Yearbook.  All members who had their portrait taken can find their photos on Donna’s website. The password to enter is “garden club” with no quotes and all lowercase.  Click on this link: Foto Flix Photography.  If anyone has trouble getting onto the site, please email Donna at donna@fotoflix.net.

Donna will be taking photos again at the March meeting for those who missed the February meeting.  Also, if you are not pleased with the photo of you taken at this meeting, you may try again at the March meeting.  Everyone is encouraged to update their photos.  They will be published in the 2013 Yearbook only and will be removed from Foto Flix Photography’s website after the April meeting.

Our speaker today was Brett McCallister – Public Relations at Orange County Parks & Recreation.  The topic was “Death to Lawns.”  We were informed about Florida’s water shortage and encouraged to reduce or eliminate lawns and to plant more native plants to reduce their water consumption.  We received handouts indicating resources for information on native plantings.  Your webmaster will attempt to post this information at a later date under our Resources links found on this website.

Newcomers Brunch Feb 2 2011

We all enjoyed meeting new members: Carolin Warren, Connie Black, Cannon Stoffell and 3 potential new members: Susan Carter, Karen Ann Blonn, Danielle Mikolaitis at the Newcomers’ Brunch.  The brunch was hosted by WGC member, Maria Hawke at her lovely home in Orlando.  The members brought food, we all networked briefly, then we all moved to the pool veranda where each Chairman of her Committe or Project presented her duties and the purpose of her Committee.

All new members are encouraged to get involved with the club activities.  Involvement in your garden club will ensure the utmost experience and you will get to know the other members quicker.

2011 December 8 General Meeting and Christmas Luncheon

Today we had a very informal meeting; no hostesses and no speakers.  Hospice Flowers were provided by Joan Yancey & Elaine Wilson.  We met at Ruth’s Chris on Sand Lake for a wonderful lunch served by the Ruth’s Chris staff.

Donna Ditges proposed a trip to Stetson Mansion in Deland, FL to tour the old mansion and to see their fabulous Christmas decorations.  It will be decorated until January 15, 2012.  We need a group of 11 people to get the 1 hour & 45 minute guided tour.  A separate post with details will be posted soon.

A Camp Wekiva Attendee’s Letter of Appreciation

Below is an email received by WGC from Sarah Myers, daughter of member Theresa Schretzmann-Myers, who attended Camp Wekiva in the Summer of 2011:

“Dear Ms. Peggy and Windermere Garden  Club:

Thank you again for sending me to Camp Wekiva.  I can’t stop singing the camp songs and I think about my time there a lot.  I sleep with my Camp Wekiva tie-dye pillow that we made every night and can’t wait to go back again next year.  I am telling all my 4th Grade friends about how great Camp  Wekiva is and what I saw there.  I hope to have them come with me next year so they can see how much fun it is.  I learned so much and wrote about it in my journal which I am sending to you.

Thank you, Sarah Myers”

Below is an email from WGC Member, Sarah’s Mom:

“Ladies, I just had to pass this along so that you know how much your fundraising efforts touch the lives of our Windermere children.  Sarah has been singing her Camp Wekiva songs every night after saying prayers and I caught her on my recording device for my Blackberry spontaneously.  It was so sweet.”  — Theresa Schretzmann-Myers

If you’d like to put it on the Garden Club website that’s awesome.  To me it demonstrates exactly what we’re trying to achieve through our Garden Club fundraising.  That through our efforts we send children to wonderful environmental Camp Wekiva  and it stimulates their love for nature and awakens their curiosity.”   — Theresa Schretzmann-Myers
