Projects and Committees 2019 – 2020

Our nearly  70 members actively engage in a range of community projects including being a partner in education with Windermere Elementary School, providing flowers for hospice and the Windermere library, and maintaining the town butterfly garden. Additionally, our annual “Crazy Card Party” fundraiser, featuring a luncheon, silent auction and raffle, underwrites

Contributions:

  • Two scholarships to University of Florida students in Environmental Horticulture
  • Windermere Historic School House
  • Nehrling Society
  • Three  scholarships for elementary school children to attend the Wekiva Youth Camp, sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs
  • Windermere Arbor Day and Elementary School plantings including the popular butterfly garden.

Windermere Garden Club Committees 

Chairmen’s Responsibilities

Arbor Day: Plan a ceremony or project commemorating Florida Arbor Day (third Friday in January). Coordinate appropriate activities.
 
Awards: Encourage awareness of awards opportunities and coordinate the application process with the various committee chairmen.
 
Birds and Wildlife: Promote knowledge of wildlife gardening, habitat and species preservation, pending pertinent legislation, and related local and regional events, websites, and facilities.
 
Butterfly Garden: Maintain garden(s) near Windermere Town Offices and at local elementary school with plants that will help beautify the garden and attract butterflies.
 
Budget: Propose a budget within the board’s guidelines.
 
Camp Wekiva: Identify local students who can participate in the FFGC summer camp at Camp Wekiva.
 
Chaplain: Lead devotions for each meeting.
 
Civic Beautification: Work with the community to enhance the horticultural beauty of our area.
 
Community Affairs: Enable community groups to promote school improvement and student learning.
 
Field Trips: Work in unison with program chairman in planning and organizing interesting field trips.
 
Floral Design: Promote knowledge of floral design. Plan class dates and obtain instructors and encourage members to participate.
 
Flower Show: Coordinate all necessary activities for a productive flower show. Encourage members to learn how to submit entries to horticulture and floral design shows.
 
Historian: Keep a written and pictorial record of garden club events.
 
Holiday Decoration: Coordinate Christmas decorations for Windermere Town Hall.
 
Horticulture: Work in unison with program chairman in the planning of workshops, give monthly reports, and encourage the exchange of plants and cuttings.
 
Hospice: Work in unison with members to provide floral designs or small flowering plants for local hospice patients. Coordinate distribution with volunteer members.
 
Hostesses: Engage members to serve as co-hostesses for the monthly meeting and provide them with the information needed to perform this function. Maintain an inventory of club supplies.
 
Library Flowers: Prepare a schedule for members to provide floral designs or live plants to be placed in the Windermere library. Notify members of their assigned library flowers week.
 
Membership: Keep a list of current members and monthly attendance records. Prepare a membership list for publication in the yearbook.
 
Newsletter: Collect information from members for publication in the bimonthly newsletter which shall be sent to all members and the District Director.
 
Programs: Arrange speakers for monthly meetings and plan education workshops.
 
Name Tags: Provide and collect name tags at each meeting.
 
Publicity: Notify proper news media of club events to promote club activities in the community.
 
Raffle: Secure and raffle a garden club related item at selected meeting.
 
SEEK: Identify high school students who can participate in FFGC summer program.
 
Special Events: Plan events outside the club’s regular general meetings.
 
Telephone/ email: Organize a telephone tree and coordinate with the e-mail chairman to notify members of field trips, workshops.
 
Town Hall Liaisons: Maintain working relationship with Windermere town officials to keep town informed of club activities and to obtain town approval for club use of Windermere Town facilities. Member must be town resident.
 
Ways and Means: Organize and plan activates for raising funds for club projects.
 
Webmaster: Maintain club website.
 
Yearbook: Compile information for yearbook and arrange for publication.
