On Thursday, Oct. 12th, our club had our first general meeting of the 2017-2018 club year, as our Sept. general meeting was canceled due to power outages and tree damage caused by Hurricane Irma.
Our hostesses for the informal coffee before the meeting were Margaret Scoleri and Denise Harbin who took Maria Hawke’s place as one of our hostesses. They went over the top with the very tasty and large amount of snacks.

We received our new yearbook pages and had our semi-annual “white elephant” sale. See “white elephant” chairman on the left below with new member Jill Knight in the photo below:
Our speaker was Ed Thralls of the Orange County Extension Service. He gave a great presentation on the types of grasses that grow well in central Florida and how to care for them.
He informed us that we should use 15-0-15 fertilizer and homeowners are not allowed to fertilize lawn grass from June 1st-Sept. 30th unless they take an online class and pass a test. (Currently the course is being revised.) Also, do not fertilize in late fall/winter because frost can harm the grass if it has new growth that was encouraged by the fertilizing. http://www.orangecountyfl.net/Environment/FertilizeResponsibly.aspx
Ed described the different grasses that grow in Central Florida. St. Augustine is still the best turf grass as long as you do not cut it lower than 3-4 inches. A popular replacement for St. Augustine, Zoysia grass has alot more pests than St. Augustine grass.
Also, Ed said that the grass that has turned brown due to storm debris being piled on top of the grass will recover.

Our next general meeting will be on Nov. 9th at Windermere Town Hall. An informal coffee will be at 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10am. The program will be presented by two Windermere GC members, Joan Prasky, Accredited Master Flower Show Judge and Maureen Tuber, Accredited Flower Show Judge. They will be demonstrating how to create beautiful fall floral designs.
Guests and new members are always welcome.
