On Jan. 8, 2015, Windermere Garden Club had its January general meeting at Windermere Town Hall. Our hostesses were Cannon S., Carolyn R., and Carolyn G. They did a great job and the food was very tasty.
Our speaker was Charisse Santoro of Winter Garden and she is involved in the City of Winter Garden’s community vegetable garden plots which are on some currently vacant land. She spoke on vegetables and community gardening in Central Florida.
Charisse had many wonderful tips in growing vegetables in Central Florida. Kale is easy to grow and are wonderful baked in the oven to make “chips”. Watch out where you plant mustard greens as they reseed easily and can quickly take over. When growing lettuce in Florida make sure it does not get too much sun or the leaves will be bitter. One of the best soil for growing vegetables is “mushroom” soil which you can get locally at Monterey Mushrooms-Orlando Facility, 5949 Sadler Rd, Zellwood, FL 32798, 407-905-4000.
Also, at this meeting our two University of Florida scholarship students were our guests and spoke briefly about their studies and activities that they are involved in. Also, their advisor spoke as well. After the meeting, the scholarship students, their advisor, and many of our members went to lunch at Westerly’s located at MetroWest Golf Club.
